Washington faced an extremely difficult task. It was necessary to wage war against the most powerful power in the world at that time. There is no doubt that the ultimate success of the Americans in the struggle for independence was largely determined by the personality of their commander in chief. The strong character of Washington, its ability to maintain the confidence of the army in any conditions, to inspire confidence in its own strength, kept the American troops from complete collapse during the critical periods of the war. Washington was not a great commander, often defeated in battle, sometimes guilty of serious military mistakes. For example, in the Battle of Long Island in 1776, due to the wrong choice of position by the commander-in-chief, out of 8,000 American soldiers, 6,000 people were killed, wounded or captured.

Washington was very inexperienced. The war with the French in the wild western forests could not teach him the art of leading entire armies. However, he managed to prove himself a bold and energetic military leader in the battles of Trenton and Princeton, in the decisive battle of Yorktown in 1781.

Creating a regular American army, George Washington faced enormous difficulties. It was necessary to impose discipline in the troops with an iron fist. Washington himself was not a cruel man, but he developed a system of punishments to maintain order in the army. For drunkenness, looting, gambling, the guilty were mercilessly flogged. Once, by order of Washington, a 12-meter gallows was erected, on which he wrote: "If it is necessary to maintain order, I will hang 2-3 people on it as an example to others." Indeed, they were sometimes hanged for desertion.

The army was poorly supplied with clothing and food. Many traders profited from supplies to the troops. The number of deaths from diseases was no less than those who died in battles. Speaking about the wintering of the army in 1777-1778. at Valley Forge, Washington noted that the soldiers "had neither good clothes to cover their nakedness, nor blankets to spread under them, nor shoes, which is why the paths of all their campaigns are marked by the bloody footprints of their feet." Being in such conditions, the army was always ready for a rebellion. It was only thanks to the authority of Washington, its energy and courage that it was possible to avoid its complete collapse.

As the hostilities with England developed, more and more Americans, including Washington, came to the conclusion that it was necessary to separate the colonies from the mother country. On July 4, 1776, Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the emergence of a new state - the United States of America. However, the decisive turning point in the war came after the conclusion of the American-French alliance in the spring of 1778. The French supplied weapons and clothing to the American army. The famous French comedian Beaumarchais was especially active in organizing help. With the participation of the French army, a decisive victory was won at the Battle of Yorktown. Having made a 750-kilometer march from New York to Yorktown, the French-American troops under the command of Washington surrounded and on October 19, 1781 forced the British, led by Lord Cornwallis, to surrender. Over 8,000 people were taken prisoner, which accounted for a quarter of all British troops in North America. After that, the war was actually over, although the Congress adopted a resolution to end it only on April 19, 1783.

After retiring on December 23, 1783, Washington again retired to Mount Vernon, intending to spend the rest of his life there in peace. He indignantly rejected repeated proposals to use the army to establish a monarchy in the country, since he always recognized the supremacy of civil power over the military and was a supporter of the republic.

Having defeated England, the young country found itself in an extremely difficult position. With the disappearance of the danger of war, the bonds that held the 13 American states together were broken. Due to the eight-year war, the financial and economic situation of the country worsened. To save the young state, it was necessary to adopt a constitution that would legislate its unity and establish law and order in the country.

The Philadelphia Convention, which opened on May 25, 1787, worked out such a US constitution. Washington was unanimously elected president of the convention. Although he was not among the main creators of the constitution, it was only thanks to the firmness of his character that an agreement was reached and eventually adopted. According to the constitution, the head of state was to be the president. In the elections held in February 1789, George Washington was elected the first president of the United States.

Washington served as president for eight years, since in 1793 he was re-elected for a second term. His presidency was marked by the caution and common sense that have always distinguished Washington. Great is the importance of Washington in organizing the work of government bodies. On his initiative, the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution, called the "Bill of Rights", were adopted. In September 1796, Washington addressed the government and people of the United States with a message that went down in history as the Farewell Address. In this will, the outgoing president spoke of the need to constantly strengthen the unity of the states, fight corruption, save public funds and avoid maintaining a large army. In foreign policy, Washington advised to avoid political alliances and maintain only trade relations with other countries.

When Washington's second term as president ended, he retired to Mount Vernon and spent the last years of his life caring for his plantations. He died on December 14, 1799 from a cold.

The foundations of the social and state structure of the United States were laid during the War of Independence and subsequently enshrined in the constitution. George Washington's greatest service to the country was that, under his command, the struggle for independence was won, and as a result of his decisive actions, the American constitution was adopted. No wonder one of his contemporaries said that George Washington was the first in the war, the first in the world and the first in the hearts of his compatriots.
