The 16th century is the century of great Spain and its kings. Charles V and his son Philip II ruled for most of the century. They were strongly influenced by Charles V's mother and Philip II's grandmother, Juana the Mad (1479–1555). She, as one of the Spanish authors wrote, "was dead during her lifetime for 50 years." As the second child in the family of the royal couple - Isabella and Ferdinand, Juana, at the age of 11, became the bride of Prince Philip of Burgundy, son of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. On October 21, 1496, their wedding was celebrated. Juana's passionate love met the complete indifference of her husband, who by no means sought to be faithful to this marriage union. After 10 years, she had to bury her 34-year-old husband. However, Juana never wanted to part with him. The corpse was taken all over Castile, and she, as if hoping for a miracle, was with him all the time, trying to breathe extinct life into him. The unfortunate young widow retired to the Santa Clara Palace, in the city of Tordesillas, where she spent all the remaining years. She constantly imagined a cat tearing to pieces the bodies of her father and husband. Remaining physically strong, she did not leave the bed for weeks and months, which also served her as both a dining room and a toilet.

From the marriage of Juana and Philip, 6 children were born.

The most famous of them was the son Carlos (1500-1558), crowned in 1516 on the Spanish throne under the name of Charles I. In 1519, he inherited the crown of the Holy Roman Empire from his grandfather Maximilian and was proclaimed Emperor Charles V. Handsome, athletic built man, he received a brilliant upbringing and versatile education, spoke German, Spanish, Italian, French and Flemish. Both health and knowledge were extremely necessary for him - the king of Spain and the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, in order to solve the most difficult tasks of that time.

Charles V plots to create a world Christian power. In his dreams, he already decided the fate of all of Europe, disposed of the lands of the Turkish Sultan and owned all of Africa, not to mention America, the owner of most of which he really was.

The idea of a unified world Christian power could only be generated by a clouded mind that was approaching illness, and by no means the concrete reality of that time. In 1494, the Treaty of Tordesilla Jassy, on the basis of the bulls of Pope Alexander VI, divided the New World between Spain and Portugal. Spain received the greatest advantages, but the sovereigns of other large European countries did not agree with this. “I don’t remember the place in Adam’s will that would deprive me of my share of world domination,” King Francis I of France wittily remarked. England, in essence, took the same position, ready at any moment to compete for “its share” of newly discovered lands . The New World demanded more and more attention not only in the military field. Charles V launched a broad campaign for the colonization and economic development of overseas possessions.

From the very beginning of imperial rule in Germany, he faced a serious problem - a broad social movement against the Catholic Church was gaining momentum. In Europe there was a fierce struggle between Catholicism and Protestantism. If Charles V most often emerged victorious on the battlefield, then in the wars of Catholics and Protestants that unfolded on the territory of the Holy Roman Empire, he had to experience the bitterness of defeat. The Peace of Augsburg signed in 1555 between the German Protestant princes and Charles V recognized Lutheranism as an official religion along with Catholicism and contributed to the strengthening of the power of the princes.

It was a hard blow for Charles V. The disease progresses. Weakening memory. Charles V leaves political activity and devotes himself entirely to religion. He devotes a lot of time to prayer every day, listens to several masses during the day, re-reads the Old and New Testaments again and again. In 1554 and 1555 Charles V is trying to renounce the royal and imperial power, which can only be done on the third attempt. On January 16, 1556, he cedes the Spanish throne to his son Philip II, and the German throne to his brother Ferdinand. More recently, a powerful monarch retires a year later in one of the monasteries of Estremadura, where he remains until his death, which followed on September 21, 1558.

Philip II (1527-1598), unlike his father, was frail, undersized, with a narrow, hollow chest, with a timid, as if apologetic look of an eternally ill person. One of the Spanish authors, enthusiastic about this king, compared the body of Philip II with a cage, short and narrow, while the entire celestial sphere was small for his spirit. Philip II did not reach the heights of his polyglot father - except for Spanish, he practically did not know other languages, but he was familiar with history and geography, and had a penchant for the fine arts. And yet, in order to manage the kingdom for 30 years, which included Spain, Italy and the territories that we today call the Benelux countries, as well as the New World, extraordinary virtues were required, which Philip II undoubtedly possessed.

He continued his father's policy of primarily protecting Catholicism and maintaining Spanish hegemony in Europe and the Americas. Just like his father, it seemed to him that he had a special mission, which only he and the Almighty knew about. It consisted in fighting against any heresy and in maintaining a general order in which all other monarchs would become vassals of Spain, at least in the spiritual sphere.

For this purpose, a magnificent architectural ensemble of Es Corial was built in the vicinity of Madrid, which includes a palace, a temple and a monastery. It was created from 1563 to 1582 by the architect Juan Bautista de Toledo. Escorial became the residence of Philip II, where he spent most of his time. There he founded a library that became one of the best in the country. From there he supervised all government services, and exclusively through correspondence. The well-known French historian Jules Michelet compared the Spanish king to a ghost who disappeared into the gloomy chambers of Escorial, which became for the monarch both a palace, a monastery, and a grave crypt in which he was buried alive. However, this perception of the personality of Philip II did not correspond to reality. He remained a completely earthly person - for example, he married four times. Among the chosen ones of his heart were the Portuguese Princess Mary, Queen of England Mary Tudor, Princess Isabella of France, Princess Anna Maria of the Holy Roman Empire. His first and last wives were his nieces. Mary Tudor was 11 years older than Philip II, but passionately loved him.
