However, imperceptibly, the state of the Huns fell into decline, and in 57-55. BC. split into two parts. The southern Huns were led by Shanyu Hu-khanye, who recognized the "protection" of China, and the northern Huns under the command of his brother Shanyu Zhi-chih, having entered into an alliance with the Central Asian tribes, migrated to the west. They waged a long bloody struggle with the warlike tribes of Wuhuan and Xianbi, as well as with their southern relatives, backed by China. In 93 AD Union of Northern Huns ceased to exist. The state of the southern Huns managed to preserve itself until the end of the 4th century.
The Huns who survived the defeat left their homeland and gradually moved to the west, mixing with the local population. In the 5th century their descendants, who had almost forgotten the glorious past of their ancestors and little resembled them in appearance, but had not lost their fighting qualities, suddenly appeared before the astonished Europe. Under the leadership of Attila, they dealt a crushing blow to the Roman Empire.
This was the last victory of the indomitable Huns. After the death of Attila, they disappear from the historical arena.
At a time when the Huns still terrified their neighbors, among the peoples subject to them, the Xianbi, the tribes of hunters and cattle breeders, quietly gained more and more power. They grazed cattle, hunted, knew how to grow bread. Their sons comprehended military science while serving in the Huns' cavalry.
The beginning of their power was the year 93. Together with other kindred tribes, they smashed then the nomad camps of the weakened northern Huns, finishing off their dying state. But their real rise coincided with the coming to power of Tanypihuai (141-181), the founder of the Xianbei state. He subjugated the lands that previously belonged to the Huns, and then, following their path, resumed raids on the northern provinces of China. In vain did the Chinese try to pacify their warlike neighbors, tempting them with honorary titles and rich gifts. They even offered unions of "kinship and peace", giving girls from the imperial house as wives to the Xianbei rulers. The nomads took both women and gifts, but the raids did not stop.
