In Italien gab es ein Gleichgewicht zwischen stark und unabhängig: stolzes Genua, freies Florenz, das hellste Venedig ... Keiner von ihnen wollte nachgeben, Gewinne teilen, Kompromisse eingehen. Die wichtigsten wirtschaftlichen Bindungen der Republiken gingen über Italien hinaus, es gab auch politische Verbündete, und zwischen den Italienern blieben die alten Gegensätze der Welfen und Ghibellinen, Feudalherren und Kaufleute, Republikaner und Monarchisten bestehen. Die neue Invasion, diesmal französisch, wurde erneut von den Italienern getrennt getroffen.
Frankreich hatte lange Zeit Anspruch auf Genua und Neapel erhoben, und 1494 fiel König Karl VIH mit einer Armee in Italien ein und eroberte Neapel. Der "Blitzkrieg" ging jedoch nicht aus - Venedig und Florenz, der spanische König, der Papst und der deutsche Kaiser mischten sich in den Konflikt ein: Die Großmächte Europas trafen erneut im Kampf um Italien aufeinander. Bis Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts. blutige italienische Kriege gingen weiter. Nachdem mehrere ausländische Armeen mit Feuer und Schwert durch Italien marschiert waren, behielt nur Venedig die volle Unabhängigkeit. Genua, das zuerst unter die Herrschaft Frankreichs fiel, stellt 1528 mit Unterstützung Spaniens die Republik wieder her - aber dies ist nicht mehr die ehemalige Republik. Der neue Führer, Andrea Doria, der berühmte Admiral in den Diensten von Kaiser Karl V., mit dem Spitznamen „Vater des Vaterlandes“, etablierte in Genua die Macht der Aristokratie nach venezianischem Vorbild, und noch strenger: in Venedig gehörte die Macht bis 120 Familien, in Genua nur 28.
Die neue Verfassung führte zu einer neuen Version des alten Konflikts: zwischen den "alten" - vollwertigen Patriziern, Aristokraten, die mit der Unterstützung des feudalen Spaniens an die Macht kamen, und den "neuen" - die die Rechte der Anhänger verletzten Freiheit, Republik und Union mit Frankreich. 1575 brach ein Aufstand der „Neuen“ gegen die „Alten“ aus, dem sich die Unterschichten mit ihren Forderungen anschlossen und nur durch das Eingreifen der Großmächte eine Versöhnung der Parteien möglich wurde; der "neue" Adel wurde an die Macht gelassen. Gruppierungen von Anhängern Spaniens und Frankreichs befanden sich auch in Venedig und Florenz. Venedig ging schließlich ein Bündnis mit Frankreich ein. Mehr als einmal abgesetzt und schließlich nach Florenz zurückgekehrt, neigten die Medici, die 1569 den Titel eines Großherzogs der Toskana erhielten, auch dazu, sich mit ihren Auftraggebern – den französischen Königen – anzufreunden und heirateten sogar ihre Verwandten mit ihnen. So wurden Katharina und dann Marie de Medici Königinnen von Frankreich.

Renaissance, Florenz, Medici – drei Worte, die untrennbar miteinander verbunden sind. Die Renaissance ist die Zeit der glänzenden Kulturblüte, die nach den langen blutigen Wirren des frühen Mittelalters in Europa einsetzte. Florenz ist eine Stadtrepublik, die zu einem der Zentren der Renaissance geworden ist. Die Familie Medici ist eine berühmte florentinische Familie, von der viele Mitglieder typische Menschen der neuen Zeit waren – talentiert, unternehmungslustig, grausam, inspiriert, wie alle wahren Florentiner, mit den Ideen der Freiheit und Hingabe an das Vaterland.
Im XV Jahrhundert. Florenz ist eine der reichsten, bevölkerungsreichsten und schönsten Städte nicht nur in Italien, sondern auch in Europa. Seine Bewohner Bardi und Peruzzi stehen an der Spitze der größten Banken jener Zeit, die nicht nur Kaufleute und Unternehmer aller Art, sondern ganze Staaten finanzierten, zum Beispiel die Regierungen der englischen Könige Edward II und Edward III.
In Florentiner Fabriken hergestellte Wollstoffe werden in vielen Städten Europas, Asiens und Afrikas verkauft. Unternehmungslustige städtische Kaufleute gründen Einkaufszentren auf der ganzen Welt. Kein Wunder, dass Papst Bonifatius VIII. mit Ironie sagte, die Florentiner seien wie Erde, Wasser, Luft und Feuer die Grundlage des Universums.
In der fernen Vergangenheit gab es Kämpfe zwischen Bürgern und verhassten Feudalherren, als die Männer des Medici-Clans Mitbürger mit den Rufen „Palle!“, „Pallel“ („Bälle!“, „Bälle!“), Werfen begeisterten Lotkugeln von Webstühlen auf die Feinde. Die Medici errangen zusammen mit dem Rest der Florentiner einen vollständigen Sieg über die Ritteradligen, der in einem speziellen Dokument namens "Established Justice" verankert ist. 1293 von den Bürgern von Florenz unterzeichnet, entzog es den Rittern alle politischen Rechte, und der Titel eines Adligen wurde nun als Strafe für Kriminelle verliehen.
Die Stadtväter wählten einen der Medici, Giovanni, in die höchste Position des Staates – den Gonfalonier der Justiz. Er sollte das politische und wirtschaftliche Leben der Stadtrepublik fast im Alleingang leiten. Alle anderen verließen sich voll und ganz auf seine Entscheidungen und konnten sicher ihren Geschäften nachgehen.

Giovanni Medici war zu dieser Zeit bereits einer der reichsten Bürger, und er fühlte sich von der ihm zugewiesenen Position nicht sehr angezogen. Sein Hauptinteresse bestand darin, noch größeren Reichtum anzuhäufen und die Finanzkraft seiner Familie zu stärken. 1409 wurde er Bankier am päpstlichen Hof, mit dessen Unterstützung er Filialen seiner Bank in Brügge und London gründete.
Das Gold von Giovanni Medici öffnete seinem Sohn Cosimo den Weg zu uneingeschränkter politischer Macht in Florenz, die er bis zu seinem Tod nicht mehr losließ und an seine Kinder weitergab. Cosimo war ein gebildeter Mann, ein subtiler Kenner der Wissenschaften und Künste. 1438 begegnete er Gemistius Plethon, der in Florenz angekommen war. Der griechische Philosoph war ein überzeugter Anhänger der Lehren Platons, er träumte davon, auf der Grundlage der antiken Philosophie eine Religion zu schaffen, die allen Menschen gemeinsam ist. Pleton gelang es, Cosimo Medici in seine Lehren einzuführen. Seitdem ist der Name des großen Weisen der Antike nicht mehr über seine Lippen gekommen. Er glaubte fest daran, dass niemand ohne Kenntnis der Lehren Platons weder ein guter Bürger noch ein guter Christ sein kann, und er überzeugte alle um ihn herum davon. Die Verehrung Platons unter den gebildeten Florentinern wird fast zu einem religiösen Kult, der mit dem von Christus selbst wetteifert. In vielen Häusern wurden brennende Lampen vor der Büste des Philosophen aufgestellt.
Der alte Cosimo liebte es, warme Frühlingstage in seiner Villa Careggi zu verbringen. Er beschnitt die Weinreben mit seinen eigenen Händen und hörte zu, wie sein Liebling, der junge Marsilio Ficino, ihm Passagen aus den Werken Platons vorlas und alte Oden rezitierte, während er sich selbst auf der Leier begleitete. Während einer dieser Lesungen starb dieser ungekrönte Herr von Florenz. Dankbare Mitbürger schrieben auf seinen Grabstein: „Hier liegt Cosimo Medici, auf Beschluss des Staates – „Vater des Vaterlandes“.
Cosimos Erbe war sein Enkel Lorenzo. Und wieder wurden in der Villa Careggi zwischen den sie umgebenden Eichenwäldern Poesie, Musik und philosophische Gespräche geführt, an denen die Enkel von Cosimo, Lorenzo und Giuliano, ihre Freunde – Dichter, Maler, Architekten, Weltliche und Geistliche – teilnahmen. Sie nannten sich die "Familie Platonov" oder Mitglieder der Platonischen Akademie - eine freie Gesellschaft von Menschen unterschiedlicher Ränge und Besitzstände, die die alte Kultur liebten.
